 Brakes and that
I've just rebuilt my front drum brakes, with new shoes and pistons. I've also adjusted the rears and bled everything through. Early road trails seem to suggest things are bedding in nicely.... however.... the first press this morning had my foot to the floor. A couple of quick pumps firmed things up and after a good hour of driving things were still good. So what's the reason for the initial lack of brakes? Still air trapped in the system, or is air being drawn in? There are no obvious leaks, and plenty of fluid in the reservoir. Your thoughts please

Residual air I suspect - need more bleeding.....

 Re: Brakes and that
You can get a vacumn thing to aid with bleeding. Make religiously sure that the fluid doesnt drop too low

 Re: Brakes and that
If it needed bleeding, it'd be back to needing a pump after a few minutes.
I wonder if it's those over-enthusiastically-auto-retracting brake cylinder rubbers again?

 Re: Brakes and that
certainly sounds plausible also having another go at the adusters all round now that the shoes have settled in a bit more
if it were air still in the system then the pedal would be spongy rather than hard

I agree, would look for a mechanical problem rather than hydraulic. Go back to the basics. In addition to the adjusters, check that the shoes are centred. If the drums have been machined check that they arnt oversize.

 Re: Brakes and that
Air never draws in, couple of pumps is all that's required to lose all the air.
I would look at adjustments of shoes, unless you've also replaced master cylinder and/or rear cylinders.

air at ambient pressure : stab on the brakes - fluid at 100s psi if air could get in the fluid would have been long gone
