So during the CT (MOT) today my headlights could not make the measuring machine to turn on (kept saying, please turn lights on).

I have brand new bulbs and I polished the reflectors. How can you make them brighter?? Are there any after market modifications additions out there??

I am sure this could not have been the best they have been as they are pretty dull.

have you checked the voltage at the headlights when they're switched on?

With a 6 volt system, a similar amount of voltage drop in the wiring will have a greater effect than on a 12 volt setup, bearing in mind that for equal power headlamp bulbs ( 45/40 watts?), 6 volt wiring needs to carry twice the current that 12 volt wiring would do.

If your bulbs are P45T type, 6 volt halogen bulbs are available, but at a hefty price...

Please check all the wires, espacially the once gowing to the ground ( - )

- from battery to gearbox
- going to the lights
and so on

1 corroded connector at 6 volt can be the diffrence (light on at the MOT lightmachine!!!)

Otherwise make a direct - wire from the batterie - to the headlights at least 5mm thick and if you can a + directly from the battery + to the lights too going over a 6 volt relais........ wich is switched by the lightswitch and if this all doesn't work try to convince the MOT man that this is a very old car and it is 'doing its best.. put on your sad cat face during all this time




Also try to rev the engine during the test this all can make the diffrence

I second what lpgo is saying. Give all the connectors a good once-over and even if they look fine, a quick rub with some sandpaper and a smear of copper grease never goes amiss.

6-volters don't have headlight relays off the top of my head, so open up your light switch and clean off all of the contacts plus the rotary barrel with sandpaper too.

A guy in my village has an old Peugeot van which he only uses now and again and when he took it for Control Techique it failed on the head lights. The guy said to him -'' You do not drive it in the dark'' and it passed. It could only happen here.

Right, I think it is fixed.

I checked the back of the speed dial and found the side light wire had melted the insulation along its whole length. I stripped it out and replaced the wire from the back of the speedo dial light to the light switch.

Took the light switch unit off and cleaned all the terminals and the rotary barrel.

Lastly, I cleaned and tightened the earths in light units.

Next I will be putting in some Halogen bulbs I think to make it a little brighter.

oh very funny....... took me a while to find them on the floor when they fell out, then the springs.....

I run 'earth' wires to all 6v lamps - gives them the best chance. Remember that there should be an earth wire from the engine to the lighting bar, otherwise the earth is via the mounting brackets which are just a rusty contact with the bar itself.
