Post ak van kingpin replacement troubles
one kingpin is worn on my brothers van so he/we tryed to remove it using the drifts, he has removed the welch plug and the bottom threaded one of course- placed a block of metal under the base then applyed the drift to the top of said king pin--
well we took turns to blugion the pin tool with a lump hammer, no way would it shift! all thats happened is the drift has belled out at the contact point& knackered itself
steve diment is coming around tomorro with a threaded press
all good fun :D

That's about par for the course with the drifts. Every so often you need to grind the end of the drift back down on a bench grinder. Some kingpins can be a bastard to shift but they all go eventually. Don't use heat, but kingpin replacement is one of the rare jobs where advice to use a bigger hammer is not misplaced.

Maybe a sledge would be better than a lump, or if you know someone with one of those loaded inertia type. Hence little effort for big shock :-)

"DONT FORCE IT - get a bigger hammer" thats our motto at work!

only if it were the case :( often its rust thats stuck the original and when it moves it rips the surface and with the riveted end of the king pin being driven through the eye the replacement is often a sloppy fit

Ayjay sometimes taking the arm off and driving it from the other end can work if the top of the KP has been riveted. its not ideal but a bit of heat can help loosen the corrosion but sometimes you have to admit defeat without a good hydraulic press.
