Hi all!

have an odd issue with Pip lately (yeah its Pippa now not poppy...)

basically she drives perfectly the problem is when parking up, if the car is on flat ground she ticks over fine, however if i park her up on a kerb or on a road thats got some serious camber going towards the path etc she will lose rpm whilst standing and eventually cut out completely!

i originally presumed that it was the fuel line on the tank and maybe theres an air leak in the pipe but surely that would be a constant running problem, i did have the top of the carb off a couple of weeks ago and gave it a clean out and its only since then that she's started misbehaving!

if i accelerate to keep her going when she goes fluffy before cutting out its a really hesitant throttle response mixed with coughing and splurting and then she'll pick up and rev away like normal but the second i'm off the pedal she'll go back to a lumpy tick over and cut out!

only when she's parked leaning to one side but it doesnt matter whether the left wheels are high or the right wheels are high... stuck float or something maybe?

something else i've picked up on after cleaning the carb is that my choke would only work upto halfway out after that it would flood her and she'd die, now the cable comes out all the way but she only picks upto about 2,000rpm tops!

hi joe, regarding the choke prob --as you replace the carb top you must relocate the choke flap operating linkage on the carb by hand or else it won,t work properly, it sounds like yours is in the wrong position
if u remove the filter you can see the choke flap to check its operation

Could it be the carb. float levels?

could be the floating device/petrol stop in the carburator which is jamming when leaning to 1 site....... so letting no or minor fuel into the carb

Thanks for the replies! The choke is operating as normal, always check when putting the top down! I was wondering whether its a float problem as tonight I noticed a slight hesitation when accelerating after a turn! Will get the top off the carb as soon as I can and have a check!

Hi G.J. ....if the float level looks ok,try the fuel delivery,it could be a dodgy pump or a split pipe ....a dodgy fuel pump gave me props [on my 2CV] .....misfiring on bends etc.....just remove the fuel feed pipe and crank the engine with your startin' handle.

btw ....[a long shot here ;) ]
I also had similar probs with a motorcycle, which proved to be a small indentation of wear on the alloy tab on the carb float, which closed the inlet valve at the wrong time [it also had the knack of keeping the valve open for too long on occassion, which then led to the carb flooding] ......I filed the offending "tab" flat with one of wifey's nail files.

the fuel pump on this engine hasn't been replaced and i couldnt tell you how old it is, so thats always a decent place to start, i drove to and from work fine today and also checked the carb when i got home, took the jets out and made sure everything was clear, no water in the carb and float levels were also fine! after putting the top back on i did park her up on the kerb just down from the drive and she didnt seem to want to cut out like she did before although i wasn't parked up for more than a minute but it was quite instant before, literally seconds after parking up she would run fluffy before the revs dropped and she started cutting out.

hopefully she's running ok again! if problems persist then parts will be replaced!

sounds a difficult one to remedy joe
def sounds like carburation though check the float/fuel level, theres a post on here regarding the setting of the float hight
if the level of fuel within the bowel is too low, that may cause fuel starvation when parked at an angle?

ayjay,
I hope you'll forgive me for suggesting that this particular problem might involve a visit to el médico.

Had a Transit that used to misfire on bends, got steadily worse until it finally cut out & refused to start again; over the course of several months & 10,000 odd miles; turned out to be a broken mount inside the coil allowing it to short out. A lot of time & effort was spent on the carb in the meantime to no avail. Not suggesting this is your prob. but sometimes lateral thinking helps.
