Rod operated carbs - correctly setting up the choke.
How do I correctly set up the choke on a rod operated carb? Do I put the wire in the hole and screw in the holding screw with the choke on or off? For somereason my choke is working its way on as I drive around And having fiddled with the cable, if I don't ge the adjustment right the choke wont stay on...

Sam, looking at the photographs in your '350' thread. the old and grubby carburettor has that little hole on the fast idle quadrant plate for a spring loaded ball bearing to hold the choke in the 'off' position., but there's no sign of it on the rebuilt carburettor. Maybe the rebuilt carburettor is an earlier version and didn't have that feature, but it could be worth a check... Also, the clip which clamps the cable outer needs some attention, as it's been distorted through over-tightening and is unlikely to grip the cable as it should. ken samfieldhouse wrote: How do I correctly set up the choke on a rod operated carb? Gripping the cable could be the issue. Should I not do it too tight then?

Sam, in this photograph, it's possible to see that the little clip is bowed. Take it off, put it on its back sitting on something solid and straighten it with a hammer and a broad punch. When installing the cable, use enough torque on the bolt to grip the cable securely but not enough to bend the clip. ken samfieldhouse wrote: Gripping the cable could be the issue. Thank you Ken. I thought it was meant to be like that!

Sam, considering that almost all of those clips end up bowed, it would appear that there's more than one person out there who works on the principle of ' the smaller the thread size, the more torque I'm going to put on it'... ken samfieldhouse wrote: Thank you Ken.
