Post subject:  Disabling the advance mechanism

The other day, I heard tell that a few of the racing teams are using a device that replaces the advance weights and from what I understand acts as a rotor for the luminition too? Supposedly keeping the timing set to full advance all the time, not just when the revs are up.

Two questions really, anybody know what im on about, and what does it achieve?

1 yes
2 stops it all falling apart and fucking up the engine - who needs the ignition to be retarded during a race?

True, something in or garage was pretty retarded during the race, but once I'd woken up a bit I felt better.

Am I right in thinking Wayne Cowling sells them? I only had a brief chat about it and details were pretty vague. I don't like the bob weights falling apart and fucking up engines, it makes me sad. Not too sure how I'll fare driving it to work like that, but I'm a bit of a driving hero so I'll probably be ok.

to a man of your skillz shouldnt be too taxing, copy the shape of the black plastic chopper in ally but instead of a big recess for the points cam bore the centre so its a snug fit on the cam shaft nose, sans bobweights and cam. 2 small grub screws diametrically opposite and bobs yer unretarded uncle ;^) ill have one

Russell,
it was Wayne who was having them made.

Dunno what the price is now, but at £16 I'd doubt that it was worth the faff of making one yourself.

Edit; Not too sure how I'll fare driving it to work like that, but I'm a bit of a driving hero so I'll probably be ok.

Just keep the revs above 3,500 and everything will be fine... ;)

For £16 you're right, I couldn't raise the enthusiasm to plug the lathe in. Thanks for the link!
