 flywheel difference is there any difference between drum brake and disc brake flywheels? we stripped a 602 engine today that had a drum brake g/box, he is going to fit a disc brake gearbox my brother was told by someone that the flywheels differ so he bought a f/wheel from a disc brake car just incase well upon inspection both f/wheels look identical

Re: flywheel difference Speaking generally, earlier flywheels are heavier, with the clutch held in place by six evenly spaced M6 set screws, instead of the six paired M7 set screws on later cars. However, a flywheel change is quite a popular mod - I've just put an earlier heavy flywheel on a late disc brake engine - and it might be that that's what's happened here. You should be able to fit a heavy flywheel to a disc brake gearbox, as long as you remember to change the clutch and the release bearing.

Re: flywheel difference search - theres plenty on this, 2 flywheels heavy and not quite so heavy and their corresponding clutch mechanisims.
heavy flywheel fits on a long spline disk gearbox no issues but a light flywheel clutch is less than ideal on a drumbrake short splined gearbox
thats the easy bit.
you will also need to make sure ALL of the components in the brake system match and dont be fooled by tales of mixing and matching brake fluids, disks need LHM with LHM master cylinder ( green) and you will have to change all the pipe seals and the rear wheel cylinders too.
YOU CAN'T USE SILICONE FLUID (Dot5)
YOU CAN'T USE DOT3 OR 4 (polyetheline glycol) and flushing with mineral spirits wont change that fact.
trust me ive still got skinned knuckles and sleep deprivation to prove it.

Re: flywheel difference It's a lot more of a ballache than merely setting up the front drums properly ... drums (in my experience) are no worse than discs when set up correctly. They just need a bit more attention.
