Well...
Could it be possible?
Replacing the steering pinion without removing the steering rack?

Cheers

Easy, remove antitheft device and steering column.
Bore away the 2 peening marks.
Use proper tool to turn the ring nut pushing on the pinion bearing.
Turn and pull the pinion out (under pressure from the rack)
Be very careful, the lower bush may be a needle bearing. Needles can drop everywhere.
Remember to fit a 1mm spacer under the new pinion bearing. The pinion is too long and will hit the bottom when securing the ring nut.

Only one problem not removing the rack is. You can not tension the new pinion against the rack.

Thanks 2CViking.

The lower bush is the one staying in the rack? If the needles drop I would have a major problem.
The 1mm spacer is allready installed , if not where is placed? Under the outer ring of the roller bearing?
Would it be a problem to squeeze it against the spring loaded rack?

Thanks again

The main problem is keeping the needles in place when twisting and pushing the new pinion down. You have no way of feeling if the needles drop due to the tension between the rack and pinion. This is not a problem if the steering housing is fitted a bush.
The 1 mm spacer is placed between under the bearing to lift the pinion up and away from the bottom. If not fitted the bottom of the pinion can bite on the bottom grease cap.
To avoid trouble, best is to remove the rack and work on the bench.

I think I'll remove the whole rack.
