When the engine is running I have a single drip of oil about every ten seconds from (i think)where the gearbox joins the engine. Has anyone got an idea of what this could be ? and what is involved with the repair. Many thanks.

Sounds like crankshaft rear main oil seal, although I'm not sure whether there is an actual lip seal there or just an oil return scroll on the crank. Either way it's an engine out job.

engine out and flywheel off so not really an easy fix whatever it is

should be a seal on the crank if its an engine that has been stood the old oil may have pitted the surface, the oil pump is also in that area so may be worth checking its not from there.

Any oil in the air filter housing?

Do an oil breather test including compression test before pulling the engine out.

Replacing seals may not be enough
