Post subject:  HELP ! 435cc Wont Start.

Just wondering if anyone can assist me please - ran out of ideas.

I have a late 74 435cc 2cv4 which hasn't ran since 1988.
The engine has been completely rebuilt but was untested until last week, anyway I got it running and it ran for about 20 minutes on the drive on tick over on two seperate occasions.
Then I took it for a spin (less than a mile) put it in the garage it stalled and I haven't been able to re start the engine.

Compression has been tested and is spot on, excellent Spark, I have stripped the carb about four times and refitted - but it just wont start and it seems to me that the carb is flooding as there seems excessive fuel in the manifold which I have dried on several times.

Any suggestions ideas thoughts would be really helpful.

Thanks.

Sticking float or needle valve in carb? I know you have stripped it, but worth a double check.

Thanks.
Ive set the float correctly - not looked at the needle valve. If the jets were to be blasted do you think this would resolve the problem.

How old is the fuel? Could be stale?

Hi Thanks for the suggestions - the points are correctly gapped and the fuel is new - seems to me as though for some reason the manifold is subject to flooding.

Pissed off is not the word - i literally have no idea what is wrong with it.

If its not been used for a whole the float could be stud open

Disconnect the hose from the tank to the fuelpump, try to make the carburetor dry (get your plugs out and and start for a while) when it runs dry (no petrolfume anymore)
put the plugs in. Get the airfilter out put some fuel on the airfilter get it in quick and start your engine. Now it should run for 5 of 10 seconds. When it doesn.t your timing will be wrong) (You can also put some startergaz into the airfilter that will work too). So when it runs you know it has something to do with your
carburator. Now put the hose back and start for a moment the carburetor get s new fuel and it will start again. Now when it start let it run for a few seconds and shut it off, disconnect the fuelhose again and now let it run again. The carbutator will run dry now and the car stops again. This tells you that your jets are allright (when it won't start/run probably something with your jets is wrong). Put the fuelhose in the pump again and let it run when it starves now I bet your carburator is getting to much fuel. Try to do it sytematic
so that you can write off things till you find the problem

are u using the old original h/t coil? they are known to play up!! we have 3 2cv,s all have the yellow high output "harley" coils fitted, and electronic ignition. even if you see a spark it doesn,t mean there is a spark once the plug is screwed in and under compression
