There should be some small metal tabs on the tailgate which can be bent upwards to prevent the pins from escaping.
If those have 'disappeared', maybe install some long thin self tapping screws through the eye on the end of the pin, into the top the tailgate?
That's worked on my Dyanes.
Re. the latch, is the tailgate catch OK?
If someone's been fond of slamming the tailgate down, there's a good chance that part of the plastic catch has gone awol...
