Good evening fellows. Got some progress on the car this weekend after a moment of inspiration. I was annoying by the concumption that my car had especially when i was reading everybody's else here in this forum. I was also suspected that there is a leak somewhere around the tank. Finally the other day after i top fueled the car looked under it and saw that there was a leak. On sunday got the tank down ( one of the most difficult work i ever done at the car) and see that the fuel line was the reason . I replaced the fuel line, cut a new rubber for the tank sender unit from epdm and reinstalled the tank . But i have a thinking that it wont do much. So i am suspecting two things . The one is the ignition timing which has been set two months ago by me and the other one is the carb. What do you think is more possible to cause this large consumption that i am getting. Both of these works are difficult to me with the ignition timing looks like a lotary as i cant get the whole idea of setting.. So if you would choose one of this job to solve the consumption problem which one would it be ? And another thing. What do you think is the best oil to put at the engine. The other day that i bought one i was wanted the Motul 6100. But the seller told me that i shouldn't buy it cause the 2cv is a air cooled angine so it needs some other type of oil and he gave me and elf . So What type of oil do you use ? Pavlos |

Citroen seems to recommend different grade oils depending on the country: In the UK Citroen used to recommend 20/50 Mineral oil, however in the 1980's this changed to 15/40. Germany: Recomended Total GTS plus 10W/40 or 15W/40 In cold regions Total GTS 10W/40 France : Recomended Total GTS plus 10W/40 In cold regions Total GTi Plus 10W/30 Italy: Same as France Spain: Recomended Total GTS plus 15W/40 In cold regions Total GTS 15W/40 So from that I'd say anything from 20/50 to 10/40 so split the difference and use a good quality mineral 15/40 oil, use a decent filter and change oil every 3000 miles (whatever that is in KM). Change filter every 6000 miles. |

I've been using 10/40 semi synthetic since I first changed the oil having put over 20,000 miles in couple of years with long drives down into the Charente SW France and back again a few times. Along with some commuting.I change oil and filter at 6,000 ,but whilst commuting before retiring the oil was dropped at 3,000.I use ASDA semi at £10 for 4 ltrs.Oil in France is mega expensive.Hence changes are made on return to UK. |

if the timing is out or the carb set wrong then that will have a much more prononced effect on fuel consumption than the grade of oil do the timing again and look on this forum for the link to setting the carb - its an old VW dealer video - VW used solex and its almost the same as our carbs |

Thanks guys fro the replies. The last time i put oil was a 20/50 . The problem is if the car need some type of oil or not . Mineral oil is different than synthetic oils ? If i use synthetic and not a semi synthetic will it make a difference ? Sean i dont think that the oil has to do with the consumption . It was just something that i would like to know as i am getting used my new car it is time to learn and treat it well. The timing is the first thing that i will check . After that i will measure the consumption and if i ll see that i wont get any results then i ll go for the carb. Sean if you dont mind that i am asking are you a mechanic ? nope i fit bathrooms for a living Altho i constantly get told to be a mechanic and i do occasionally help some friends out , and get taken to all sorts of races as a mech tell you this forum IS turning into Volk Zone with its daily "which oil - semi synth will kill your engine - you gotta use what the factory had in 194something and change it everyday" thread

Synth and semi synth do not cause leaks - old- worn -brittle seals etc do. most of us have the luxury of a filter, VW of a certain age had a mesh to strain out the bits of piston ring and small ends
