So....I put the engine back together and went for the startup.........

After a few cranks it sounds like its trying to fire on one, but after dies when you let the key go......Grrrrrr....

Stick a finger down the plughole and turn over on the handle...can feel compression on one side, nothing amazing though, should it push my finger out? on the other side its even less, cant feel anything. Any ideas on what Ive done wrong?

both heads have been changed and possibly a mix and match of valves...lapped in for ages...Tappets adjusted as Haynes using .25 and .20 gaps, and new valve stem seals

I had to walk away from it tonight and lock the doors.......

Gerry presume that left finger feels more pressure than the right?

Cranking with the handle wont really pop your finger out the plughole and youll spin it faster with your good hand.

Have a few beers tonight and a long lie in the morning i can be over by about 11 if your about - so get the coffee on for then.

OK Big thanks to Sean for risking life and limb, (and the wrath of his understanding partner), and spending the day sorting out my schoolboy errors......

Turns out that the reason for the non-starting was a slight imbalance on the compression test.....150 on on side and 0 on the other.......When tested with white spirit, my careful decoke let the fluid run right thro....

A quick rumble thro my assorted collection of valves soon found an acceptable replacement and after a few hiccups, the motor fired
