The cheese grater motor has finally packed up. Luckily I've got a spare modern wiper setup, but it seems that later ones require four wires whereas the earlier type has just two wires. Anyone ideas as to which I should connect up?

Thanks, Ben

I have a spare 'cheese grater' in the garage. If you're interested, I'll test it to see if it's ok.

I think the wiring differences were covered recently either here or on 2CVGB.

Thanks john. Just had a quick look on 2cvgb and it appears, as expected that the extra wire is related to the auto parking. So, any ideas what I should use for the auto park?

Presumably auto parking is accomplished internally on the later type. So maybe leave it disconnected.

Disregard what I've just said. Got my wires crossed.

Just looked at wiring diagram. Ken's right (below). If it was me I would stick with the cheese grater! :)

Ben,
best to be very careful when wiring up one of the later motors, as parking/braking involve earthing, hence that extra wire into the motor.
Also, the switch is a 'changeover' type, not the simple 'on-off' type used with the early motors.
I seem to recall that Joolz gave the lowdown on how the circuitry works a while back, if a search on this forum doesn't find it, best to wait until Joolz next pops in...

What me? really? Sorry I've only the vaguest recollection of discussing this previously, and certainly didn't commit the details to memory.

It'll be very simple to control the modern motor with a basic on/off switch, assuming you don't want the hassle of wiring up the auto-park. If you did want to wire it up to auto-park you'd need a modern type switch and to run 2 more wires from the switch to the motor.

I do remember that the colour codes on the wiring diagram can be misleading, in that they refer to the colours of the loom and not the colours on the motor, which are the same, but in a different order (thanks citroen!).

If a search of the forum doesn't turn up an answer, I'll have a look at a spare motor tomorrow and work it out again.

Okey dokey, so the parking is an electric brake on the later motors compared to a mechanical brake on the earlier ones. I'm getting so bored of changing motors (on the second cheese grater, which just packed up whilst stored in the boot doing nothing) that I'm going to wire the new one in without the brake. I would like to keep my nice brown wiper switch, so don't want to use a 'modern' switch :)

Thanks all!

I found, in an old copy of 2cvGB news, an article on rebuilding cheese graters. The back copies now reside with JamesWallace if he's willing to have a rummage.

Thanks Viking - does that mean I need to find a relay to get the autopark working? It doesn't say what type of relay it needs - any ideas?
