Richard,
unfortunately, that ignition lock has reached the end of its useful life, so it's time to find a good s/h one or blow whatever's left of the Christmas budget on a new lock. :(

Some folk have abandoned the original setup when their original switch has failed and used separate switches instead, a latching type for turning on the ignition and a 'push to make' type for the starter.

Rumour has it that you must have a working steering lock for the MOT from next year. I asume this would be if it was originally fitted with one.

i would imagne there will be a cut of date etc,

i cant see that being too heavily enforced on classics though?

Looks like it has been a testable feature since at least October last year http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_210.htm
