Hi folks,not something I would normally ask,but I need to hire/rent/borrow some special tools.I need the tool for removing the pinion gear from the steering rack and either one or two 50mm open ended spanners to remove the suspension cans on my van.Will need them fo a couple of weeks and will arrange collection etc. I will pay for the use of them,thats not a problem.I would normally buy special tools,but I cant see me ever using these again.

Are the suspension nuts not 46mm?
If so,
I used a set of teng tool mole grips to do it. Not 'proper' but worked fine

No,they are a whopping 50mm.

I was thinking of them.My pliers are not big enough.Tried a pair of Vice Grips,wouldnt touch them.Stuck fast

don't think you'd go too far wrong purchasing one of these, by the time you've taken into account the cost of posting a similar spanner out and back.

The other advantage with this one is that it's a proper piece of kit, not something laser cut out of mild steel plate, which may look like a spanner, but that's as far as it goes.

Half the battle in undoing those end fitting nuts is parking the spanner on a nut and giving it a few thumps with a 4 lb lump hammer.
Rotate the whole fitting to the next flat and repeat until the nut is free.
Don't forget to loosen the inner nuts (closest to the suspension canister) first, as you can deal with the outers once the suspension is removed from the chassis.

( p.s. I've got an OE tool for removing a steering pinion which you could borrow, but it would have to be on a 'break it or lose it, you replace it' basis, as it's something which I use regularly when rebuilding racks. Even that small lump of steel weighs 0.5kg, btw )

Hi Ken,It really is a small world.JW suggested to look on e bay and I found the same Ad.
I have made an offer,but if they dont accept,I really dont mind paying the asking price.Maybe I am just being silly,16.00 is cheap for a spanner that size.The 46mm ones I bought cost me over 30.00each.
Ken,if you are willing to let me use your tool ,I would of course replace it if it got lost or damaged.I can arrange collection,and as I said,will gladly pay a fee for using it,thats not a problem.
