I am wondering if anyone can tell me what carb should be fitted to a 1967 M4 engine out of my van?
Also,it appears that the cooling fan is not the correct one as the fan guard has been packed out to allow the longer bodied fan to fit.How many fins should be on the original one?

Dave, sorry for not replying to your pm, I'm under a lot of pressure at the moment.

If you have actual pedals you should have the little Solex carb. Hetty's a '66 and she was the last of the 'big' carb vans.

The fan should be a big one filling the whole of the front cowling. Should be a off whitish colour, 8 blades, leaving very little clearance between the blades and the cowling. To find one, follow the yellow brick road and ask the wizard of oz to get his flying pigs to send you some ;)

Your cowling should have studs to attach the stone guard, not bolts.

You NEED to come to the van camp in September. It's gonna be a uk AK350 invasion ;)

I'll pm you re manifold. Where in the world are you?

Hi Sam,thanks for reply. My van has the round straight pedals and an organ throttle pedal. The carb on it is a Solex PICS 30,I want to know if this is the correct one.
The fan fitted has nine fins, its too big.
Let me know when and where,I'll be there :P

Hang on.... 8 blades or 9... I can't remember. When you say 'too big' do you mean 'it won't fit in the cowling' because if it fits and is a very close fit to the cowling it's the right one. Ami 6's and AKs were fitted with the biggest A series fans on a 602cc car, everything else has a smaller fan.

Your carb is probably correct if it came from the factory with an alterbator.

Hetty's a bit of an odd ball because they only fitted big carbs to 12v AKs for the last 6 months of 1966. There are very few big carb AKs around, out of 6 or 7 350s at the van camp, mine was the only one with the solex 40.

I'll consult my book when I get home, but I think they changed to small carbs in '67.

The last of the AKs before the AKB was introduced would have had piston pedals, small carb, M4, 12V - like yours.

Its as if the fan body is too long. The fan guard has been packed out to allow it to fit. :o

Just had a look at the metal body,it looks like the fan should be held on with four bolts but mine has been drilled out to take a black fan,not a white one

Sam,
8 blades and 'about' 290mm outer diameter, compared with 275mm for the fans used on later 602 engines.
A close fit of the blades in the cowling is essential for the cooling to be efficient.

ken.
