Post subject:  Putting a tyre on a rim

Just bought two new tyres to replace the ancient and highly illegal ones on my car. Too broke and tight to take them to ATS to get fitted, so could anyone guide me through best practice on how to take the old tyres off and putting the new ones on without knackering my rims.

Cheers.

Pretty simple:

Or use your feet!

When you mount, don't like this:

Dont just go to local ATS or such, they probably have to look up the price on a computer. I had two tyres fitted in the summer at a local independant garage. It cost me ten quid for both.

Offer to pay cash to the actual local guy doing the job, offer to take the old ones away (I think it saves the "environmental charge", but he didnt care and just let me chuck them on the pile anyway) and I didnt get them balenced as there would have been extra work setting up the jig for three holes. They went on the back of the car and frankly I dont go fast enough to notice any wobble (and if you DO manage to do it yourself then you wont balence them anyway).

I think "Knightley" had a go himself last year, if I recall he did one himself on principal and took the other to the garage !....I reckon some jobs are easier to find a man around the corner to do it for you if you offer a few beer vouchers.

If you do it yourself I would be interested to see some pics and how you get on.

new one on is easy if you lube up the rim - tyre soap - handcream or a bannana skin ( i jest not!) but squeezy is loaded with salt

youll need a couple of tyre levers a valve core tool and a decent compressor helps if youve not got access to those it maty be worth taking the £iver hit for a fitter to do it.

snigger..

Seriously...I have the tyre off and ready to fit inner tubes to the wheels on the trailer (Erde 102) I use for the 2CV. I have tyre levers and simply cant get the new ones on...am I just being a wimp and not going in hard enough I just seem to get into a mess with bits of tube sticking out ...so again feel its a few quid for a fitter to sort out...

...getting tyres off is one thing....but putting new ones on (especially with inner tubes) seems another

depends what make of tyres they are. Firestones have a very stiff side wall and are a bitch to fit yourself michelins and mabors are easier. Put plenty of lube on and put one edge on and then stand on the tyre and force the bottom edge on. Do the same with top edge but there comes a point where you will need the levers to get the last bit on. Then connect to a compressor and inflate and keep your little pinkies well out of the way as it will bang over the bead.

I did spot that on youtube...it looks great....anyone saying "do not try this at home"....means it's got to be worth a shot.

How does it work?

Sadly I have no hair on my head anyway so still cheaper to take to tyre fitting place than buy hairspray....and hows it work with an inner tube....

There is a trick somewhere (I think on youtube) with using a ratchet strap to squeeze the middle bit in and form a seal.....

....but that looks great....at some point I will try that anyway...
