Post confusing cutting out
My car occasionally cuts out,
its random, Chris and I thought it may be due to the fact id been puting high octane fuel in, so I have been putting normal stuff in, but not much, and its been fine, admitedly id let the tank run v low yesterday so may have been some left of the high octane stuff, and some got through but it cut out, and no power on the ignition (almost like a complete eletrical failure, fuel gauge, oil pressure light, and indicators, dead, as if the ignition was off..)
so at this point im doing 20mph entering a roundabout, so an ideal situation really, so dumped in 2nd and dumped clutch to bump start, wouldnt go (thats when i realised ignition dead) so turned key to the off position, and back to the ignition on position, did the 2nd gear dump clutch procedure and it fired up and went straight away, without a problem,

Dodgy ignition barrel maybe? i recently had to spray wd40 down there to free the lock off, thinking of maybe bypassing the ignition switch for some testing to see if it is this, but anyone come across this before?
annoyingly its not the sort of thing i can mimic to see if its still happening

James,
98 octane fuel will not make your engine cut out, but a dodgy ignition contact drum could do.

James first part of post if flawed - higher octane petrol and lower wont just sit as 2 layers in the tank like some fancy cocktail -

think you have answered your question in the 2nd half ;)

The contact drum pulls off the bottom of the lock assembly. It's a 120 second job to replace it.
