How is the steering wheel for an Ami 6 made?
I have had the steering wheel for my 2CV-project, hanging in the garage. Unfortnatly (one freeeeezing night), the wheel hit the floor, and the plastic broke. The wheel is about 100 kms from my home, so I can not se how it is made. Can anyone of you blokes (os sheilas) who can tell me if the wheel is welded to the "colomn"? The idear is to get a saddler (?) to wrap som cow skin around it.

It's actually quite easy to do. It looks like the leather is sewn together round the rim, but that is a partial illusion. After the leather is made to size you sew down the circumference on both sides of the split by machine. You don't sew the leather, it is the circle of stitching that is laced together with needle and thread. You can see the principle here, the leather is made and joined, the machine stitching is done, but the hand sewing hasn't yet been completed.

How about the stuff used for wrapping tennis racquet grips? If you can get it in real leather and an appropriate colour.
