Citroen's specification is between 0.35 mm - 0.45 mm aming for 0.40 mm.

I wonder if anybody has measured the performace of setting the gap at 0.35 mm vs 0.45 mm?

I think only your'e dwelltime will be shorter

Ipgo,
that's with the wider gap, which gives a reduced time for coil saturation, so may result in a misfire at high rpm. ;)

With the smaller gap, there will be too much dwell, resulting in an increased tendency for the coil to overheat when ticking over in a traffic queue.

Also, the specified range for a gap ensures that the _rate_ of opening of the points is optimised.
If the gap is set too wide or too narrow, the rate of opening will be slower, with an increased tendency for arcing to occur and hence a weaker spark...

Yes, I think you're right.... when the gap is smaller, it takes longer before it is lifted and closes earlier meaning longer dwell.

Learned something again today.

Slightly off topic out of curiosity does anyone ever set points gap using a dwell meter rather than just gapping with feeler gauges any advantages/disadvantages??

always

and i do it at a fast idle rather than at tickover for the same reasons its advantageous to time the engine while its running

I always set it at .4, and o/t I always find the timing tricky, 'cos I find the timing changes as you do the bolts up

What is the best timing position doing it statically? I always go for 1-2 teeth after the firing point (so 1-2 teeth after the peg goes on the hole)

if it works for you r car then thats right - over on the other post you say your car is running well so if its not showing any signs of pinking mark the flywheel with the point where the points open (multi meter-test light etc) and then use that the next time you set the points rather than pegging the flywheel.

I marked it a while back, and always use the mark I've got. As mentioned it does run well I tip-exed flywheel and stick To it, but I was curious to views on it

It does run on, occasionally, but after readin the plug topic I'm going to try b7's and see if that solves it,
