Filled up my green friend at a Gulf garage half way to work yesterday ,although on a main road not the busiest of garages and half the pumps are shut to make way for someones car sales business.
After work it was very spluttery at about 1/3 throttle but fine after that and all the way home at 65 mph then very spluttery again at 1/3 ish throttle in town until i revved through it .. shite fuel, blocked jet? :|

It's certainly been known. I've heard of some little-used filling stations having lousy cleaning routines and allowing water to build up in the tanks.

So, perhaps there's water in the petrol? Worth lifting the top of the carb and having a look in the float chamber? (Don't drop any screws down the barrel...)

Or, do you have an in-line fuel filter? Can you see any signs of a 'separate' liquid in there?

And, if you don't have a filter, perhaps worth fitting one? :P

I do have one down on the chassis leg, good point will have a look at that. Maybe some wd40 in the carb and then a top up with some posh petrol from the esso in order :P

If it's water - and of course I've no idea if it is - then not even good ol' Esso will help; your tank will have at least an inch of water splashing about at t'bottom, ready to cause mischief.

In which case by far the best solution is to remove it and clean it out. You might get away with syphoning out any water first - using a small-bore pipe so's it sits right on the bottom - followed by an additive (is it Acetone or something) which makes water miscible in petrol.

(I don't think WD40 will do anything useful, tbh.)

Thanks DA..
Well wd is meant to disperse water in localised areas ,but yeh i can see it being useless if i have a lot in the system . I syphoned the tank out dry with my syphon pump thingy ,had about 10 litres left, then i filtered it through one of those funky yellow 'fuel filter funnels' (they separate water from fuel, years ago i tried it by adding ribena mix water to see what got left behind) Then i sprayed carb cleaner into the top of the jets and did the hand on venturi thing, and took it out for a run, its a lot better although still a little iffy , so i must be headed in the right direction anyway. Haven't had the filter off yet ,thats next.
There wasn't a lot of suspect stuff left behind in the fuel filter funnel though tbh :|

Pour some meths into the tank, Ben. That will soak up the moisture nicely and send it out through your tail-pipe.

Ben,WD 40 will do nothing to sort it out.As advised, meths or acetone should sort it.
Obviously,if it is water, the best solution is to take the tank out. Also gives you a chance to check the pesky rubber pipe on the outlet of the tank. Its not a bad job to do,only 4 bolts and the filler tube to undo.

Could be, its yellow! But the labels gone. Got it from work when we were trying something out. I filled it with transformer oil and topped it up with some ribena water , and the ribena water remained ,so it did work then.

Cheers Dave it's a van although that would probably be easier :P
