the fact that the LT coil wires were fitted the wrong way..

I was under the impression you couldn't get these 'the wrong way' and I vaguely recall something about swapping them over periodically makes your spark plugs last longer?

That definitely sounds like overheating causing partial seizure.

I agree.

Yep, this happened to me couple of times same symptoms, soon you might find oil disappearing and some blue smoke every now and again :S

Hope its not but it does sound like a partial seizure.

Hi Russ,
reversing the polarity of the low tension connections to the coil has the effect of reversing the polarity of the HT spark.
Because one of an A series engine's plugs is always fired 'in reverse', its earth electrode will be eroded, rather than the more noble metal generally used for the centre electrode.

So, even if you've got those superduper plugs fitted ( where's Jono? ;o), it's worth swapping the LT connections around every couple of thousand miles. Maybe even at every kingpin greasing time?

Thanks Ken, I knew there was a genuine reason for it, but couldn't reallt remember it.

Thanks also, for reminding me to fit a grease nipple to the kingpin housing....

Well our exhaust failed on the way to Falmouth not really a duel carridgeway but thought i would put it on here as it is a sort of 'motorway' bad experience. :P Sounded really good shame to repair it but i suppose we had to. Sounded a bit like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaHxclWV8YU

The 'Hi, my name's Louise, and I'm paranoid' thread?!

Ken - can you still swap LT leads around if you're running an electronic ignition? My 2cv's done about 25,000 miles or so now on its iridium cored plugs; so, although it shows no signs of needing it whatsoever, perhaps I ought to swap the LTs round now (or better still, the plugs themselves - stop them seizing in).

Hi Jono,
afaik, there should be no problem with swapping the LT leads with electronic ignition installed, but in your case it's probably better to swap the plugs as they've been in for such a high mileage.
From what I've read, garages have been having trouble with plugs seizing into the cylinder heads in modern cars, because the extended life plugs fitted at the factory last so long.

( Btw, your Dyane didn't half scamper up the hill out of Darley Dale, but I guess it's had years of practice. ;)
My old crate got stuck somewhere between 1st and 2nd gear with so much ballast on board. )
