Post Identify a gearbox?
Hi all,
Does anyone know if it is possible to know if a gearbox is Dyane or 2cv based on its outward appearances?

I've had this one around for years, I suspect it is from a Dyane, but can that be told without taking it apart and counting the teeth?

Underneath about 1cm of historic crud on the lid I found these strange markings...

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

am i right in thinking the dyane boxes had longer or shorter input shafts than 2cv boxes? i know its all todo with splines and lenth of shaft due to the dyane's mostly having the older 3 finger clutch rather than the diafragm clutch which wasnt fitted till 82' according to cats! i didnt realise the dyanes actually had the later clutch, did they come with a lighter flywheel aswell on the very last models?

A closer shot of the input shaft would help.

If there's a single ring engraved on that smooth section just forward of the splines, it's a Dyane box.

No ring(s), it's got 2CV gearing and with 2 rings it's a 2CV4 box... ;)

Wow where else could you get such advice at 1am? Thanks!
I'll get a better shot of the input shaft and let you know.

So I guess My suspicions were correct then - Dyane?
It looks like one engraved ring.

sorry to hijack

but can the older style gearboxes be used with a newer engine? for eg one which would have been on a car with a 3 finger clutch and heavy flywheel, and fitting that onto a car with a light flywheel and diaphragm clutch?

You can Joe,
But its not ideal, the splined part of the shaft doesn't go all the way down the boss in the middle of the clutch.
Plenty of the earlier racers didnt come to any harm and the Dyane box that's in my 2cv has been ok for the last 9 yrs

changing input shaft is a bit of a chore as it means taking the box pretty much down to its component parts.
