I want to paint over the top of the red oxide as the red oxide is soft, id like a solid paint, tough and durable...

Whatever you paint over it with will come back off again James as the red oxide isn't tough stuff. Cellulose will lift it up and wrinkle it so your best bet is enamel. The trouble is that even enamel paint is better than the soft red stuff that you put under it, which will be your weakest link

I can't understand why you insisted on using that stuff, if it scratches off easily now then there's little point trying to paint a protective coating over it. If you must, then use enamel.

There isn't any point in applying high zinc primer over the top opf red oxide. It only does something when it is in contact with the steel. The idea behind it is that it makes a sacrificial layer. In effect the paint functions as the anode.

Because high zinc primer will react with any electrolyte that is present it is hard to over coat. If you're going to hand paint over the top of red oxide primer use something like Rustoleum. It'll make a good corrosion and moisture resistant barrier. Rustoleim can be a tad awkweard about curing occasionally.

Always be careful about painting cars badly. Poor paintwork is way harder, way more time consuming and way more expensive to remove than it ever was to apply.

And it is still bloody GUESS

thanks tom
250, thanks for the advice, i know nothing about paint,

i want to paint over the sills, i was thinking ealier maybe ishould get some white hammerite, against my religion as im not now a fan of hammerite, but worth a try. i was going to strip the red oxide back and away using thinners,
i understand what you mean about the zinc stuff though, about it going on metal, and being hard to paint over,
id like to be able to spray over the paint afterwards and make it look nice..
