Bounce the car up and down, if you push it down, it should then go up, then down, then up a tiny bit then rest

As James said, really push down on the rear bumper. If it bounces around like jelly they need replacing :)

If you work on one corner at a time, that will give a better idea of which individual damper is shot ( or still serviceable ).

i did the "bounce test" as u said ken, , all are ok , altho one has a bit of slack , probably a bush eye worn causing a bit of play-- i think ill replace all 4 as they must be ancient(like me)

If there fine I wouldn't bother
The shocks on my car are the originals at 24 years old and still fine...

Post Re: shock absorbers?
The shock absorbers on my Charleston are (according to the diagrams referenced in this thread) fitted back-to-front, i.e. dust covers towards the chassis. I've ordered 4xMonroes, but just out of curiosity:-

A) Does anyone know if this may have caused internal damage? My guess is "yes". The suspension has a "clonk".

B) Is there a secret to getting the old ones off? Apart from lots of brute force? Is it inevitable that the bushes will be destroyed (they look OK from the outside)? Do new Monroes from ECAS come with bushes fitted?

Thanks in advance from Alan D. in Cheddar, Somerset.
