Check that your air-filter cover is screwed on properly.

Check over all of the exhaust joints - if you cup your hand around the joint, you'll feel a blow.

It's well worth having a good look all over, too, first thing on a cold morning, since you might well see any exhaust gases.

A trick I've used in the past is to dribble a little engine oil down the carb throat with the engine running. Again, it makes the exhaust very visible, so you'll see if the gases are escaping. It takes a little while to work fully, because the oil tends to sit in the inlet manifold for a bit. We did that to Jono's car at the French Nat'l this year - nothing visible at first, but we found and sorted the blow fairly quickly. Then, later, when they went into town... Smokescreen!

if you had a backfire at some point in the latest round of calamity then check the heater tubes/balance pipe that run from the exhaust manifold stub to the carb

also the cross box , spigots swan neck etc

If it;s just when you're flat out, then in my experience you're air filter is popping up. I've seen cars with threaded rod through the entire assembly to keep it down.

It's worth looking at the swan neck, too. Ellie's car had a pinhole in the swan neck, where the clamp had chafed through. Quiet, until you hit the second choke.
