Hi folks,

I need to spray an area ....well quite a big area.

I have done this before using cellulose, and its been fine.

The actual coulour I still have plenty of....again celly, but I am out of "anti-bloom" thinners and can only get hold of the "standard" thinners....and £25 for 25 litres its cheap enough and local.

I have never tried trying to get a decent finish with "standard" thinners, am I wasting my time and the valuable celly colour in even attempting it ? Anyone tried and failed or been succesful....and hints and tips appreciated.

Yes been following that thread, and mega advice from "Old Nail" too.

I am assuming "top quality thinners" are the "anti bloom" ones I used to use.....thing is my supplier (ponswood paints in Hastings) cant get them any more and the only thing I can find is the cheap stuff......I am not trying to save a few quid, just cant find the decent stuff !

So if anyone does know of a supplier of decent celly thiners would appreciate it or again anyone any luck at all in using the "standard" stuff.

Anti bloom thinners are for use in cold weather. When the atmosphere starts to get laden with moisture the tiny atoms of water in the air mix with the atomised paint from the gun and cause 'bloom', which is a sort of bluey haze in the finish.

Standard thinners are ok for cleaning your gun with and for basic jobs like primer, high gloss thinners are better for topcoat, and anti bloom for if you're doing the painting in an unheated garage in say - November. Having said that, that's exactly what I did, with just high gloss thinners and got no bloom at all, just don't spray on rainy days.

Ebay is best if your local supplier can't get it.

Old Nail got there before me - I've earmarked a few sellers on eBay for my thinners.

From what info I've gathered, I find three basics types of cellulose thinner:

'Standard or Gunwash' speaks for itself! Worth getting some, tho', to save a bit of cash for cleaning out your 'quipment.
'Gloss/SuperGloss/HiGloss' - best stuff for, er, best finish.
'Anti-Bloom' - you've had this explained. I read on one site that this stuff basically takes longer to dry - it's less volatile - and therefore doesn't get as cold as it evaporates. Since it doesn't get as cold, moisture in the air isn't as likely to condense on it. So, no 'magic' properties. (I could be wrong, tho'...)

If you plan to do the work fairly soon, the weather is still pretty mild (it was 19oC down here today - I nearly melted!) so I'd, personally, be inclined to chance the 'Gloss' type over Anti-Bloom.

The best supplier I found on eBay was 'Lugspaint' (I'll find a link) who had 5l of each of Gloss and Std for £30 delivered - pretty good. I haven't tried them yet, but plan to.
