eek  this is a single sharp cracking noise (though nothing's stopping the drive) on full lock - fair speed - first noticed this when i was throwing the car round a bit....late for meeting!! drive isn't effected and no noise under normal steering / turning etc. bearings seem fine - no play in wheels - drive shafts seem okay, and are torqued up to the drums..... any ideas??? Will |

Willami, if the same thing happens when braking to a stop and setting off again, it could be that the axle bolts need tightening up. mine has a knocking noise, but depends what you describe as cracking, i geuss, but i think and was suggested that with mine its the bottom of the kingpins tapping on wheels where the seems have rusted maybe wrong but just thought id ad my shout in |

 My car has a cracking/knocking noise on take-up & braking, so I'm going to get those axle bolts checked pretty damn sharpish.

come to think of it, sometimes (only sometimes,) when i accelerate and brake mine does too!!! uncle ken, i sense a question, how to tighten them!! |

As Ken has already said earlier, remove them and clean the thread before torquing them up. They can be a cock to get out because the threads rust and seize up in the axle. best to run a die down them and grease them. You'll get a true torque setting that way too. Lefty-loosey/Righty-tighty. |

Hmmm .....sorry to butt in on the thread  But I get an occassional knock [it's more like a loud "crack" sound] on my car ['88 2CV] on full lock. It only happens at "car parking speeds" ....like when I'm manouvering in/out of parking places or backing down my drive to drive off up/down the street....  I had wondered if it was an "iffy" kingpin ....but my car passed its MOT only this week,and the tester said the 'pins were OK. Any ideas/suggestions .... best regards T. |

Not so fast young Jedi torque wrench settings are normally given for DRY fitting of the screw fastner however in th case of axle bolts im sure the benifit of copper grease overweighs the the chances of overtightening of those bolts- but aim for the lower figure in the range Sean |

The knocking sound turning the steering to full can be from steering: pinion, steering rack, sliding guide and/or ball joint set. Put a hand on the steering track rods, feel the knock when turning the steering wheel. Best done with wings off and the car on the ground. Remove one track rod from the rack to eliminate one side and so on. |
