The fuel gauge hasnt worked for a while, so its not a major fail.

Probably not got any in the car tbh.

Saying that, its Kims old car, she had issues with the fuel pipe? I think? Graham fixed it he will know more.

Check if fuel get's to the pump by splitting the pipes under the pump. If there's no fuel coming out, there could be a hole/split/crack in the fuelline from the sender to the pump.
Most likely the rubber bit on the fuel sender.

To check the pump:
get a jerrycan, put a fuelline in it, connect it to the pump and start. If it starts, there's nothing wrong with the pump ;)
