Anybody fancy putting up a set of clear and detailed instructions on how to re-wind a gearbox? very soon?

If not, expect an idiots guide, coming soon.

Step 1. Make sure the fire in the wiring loom has been extinguished.

He's a national treasure is our Russ.

I've found some instructions which I've printed out, I can't say I understand them, but I'll have a go, and rtake some pictures, and if all goes well, write it up here.

Right, despite what seemed like clear instructions, I've hashed this up.

opened box, located the collar that was flapping about like a prick in a bucket, 'ideal', thinks me, 'that looks easy'. Well it was and it wasn't, Ive screwed the collar back on, and peened it over. Put it back together, went to try it and despite the gearlever being where it was before in neutral, it seems something's moved and the car was actually in a gear, and jumped forwards. The gear lever now sits in what appears to be neutral about 2" further back than before. When I lift the clutch up, even in neutral it's making a horrific grinding noise like somethings isn't engages properly, or is trying to engage when it shouldnt. I've opened the box up again hoping to see an obvious fault, which I cant. What have I done wrong? despite the collar being screwed back on and peened (it hasnt moved since) the car still makles the noise it did before, and now the gearstick's in a different place.

Assuming you didn't slacken the pinch bolt where the gear lever fits to the selector coming through the lid of the 'box, I think you've managed to rotate that selector. It's on a ball to allow fore-aft and side-side movement, but IIRC it's keyed to prevent it rotating - if it is, then it might be that one or more of the selector slides are out of line.

I think you're going to need to figure that out, and to make sure all the selector forks are in neutral before you put the lid back on.

The second one of those pics shows the middle selector - 2nd/3rd - slid forwards, so in 3rd. The bottom selector - 4th - is in neutral, the top - 1st/reverse - is in neutral.

Well, bizzarely, it works now. Rick, the gearbox guru called me (thanks Ade) and talked me through what was likely to be wrong, although most of the conversation involved me looking at a gearbox blankly while Rick described components I've never heard of or seen before. Everything he said was already as it should be, so I put the top back on, and it works. I've yet to go and take it up the road (because I'm too much of a pussy, and it'll probably break) but a little bit of trying it5 up the drive and it seems to be ok. I still have no idea what I did wrong, or to be honest, whether I've fixed it properly, but there you go...

Since you were sulking and whimpering that you wouldn't call him and didn't want to touch it any further, it seemed texting him and asking him to give you a call was the easiest solution...
