Post subject:  my shock absorber just fell of...
errr... as it says above. My near side rear shock absorber fell off.

I have a 2cvCity chassis which has mounting points for bolts to be screwed into that hold the shocks on. The front bolt has sheared off so the rear shock just fell off at the front.

That was.... 20 mins ago... luckily I was only half a mile from home so I used a cable tie around the tie rod to hold it out the way to get home.

How do I get the remains of the bolt out of the hole so I can out a new bolt in :?: All the bolts are well greased but sadly theres nothing left of it sticking out for me to get a purchase on.

I only fitted the shocks about 2 months ago, maybe I did them up too tight?

In 3 years this has never happened, so I'm kinda guessing I did something wrong when I fitted the new ones :(

It's not unknown for shock mount bolts to break on 2cv city chassis. There are various products you could use to remove the remains of the bolt. Try first using a set of stud extractors, which will mean drilling a small hole into the broken stud and then rotating the extractor backwards (ie, with a left hand thread) in it. If that fails it may be a case of drilling the whole of it out and retapping the hole. I've no idea what the thread size used on a city chassis is though.

If it's "well-greased", and hasn't been in there too long, then using a LH drill bit to drill the hole for the extractor may well do it.

Or, for a more permanent solution to the problem, a chassis change.

I also lost one of the front damper bolts on my 2CV City chassis. It simply became undone and fell out. I was a bit surprised as whilst I don't torque nuts and bolts ever, it's a first for me. I replaced the bolt with another and just did it up even tighter.


To my mind there's nothing at all wrong with the 2CV chassis (in spite of what some people say) however I don't think replacing the original Citroen studs was a good engineering solution as it's never good to have all that load on a cantilevered bolt.

Awesome thats the kind of info I need. I'm hoping that the grease will help it undo. I'll get onto it at the weekend. Thanks for that chaps.

Maybe the bolt worked itself loose and with the added leverage that's what caused it to shear... :?:

Is there a strength marked on the head of these bolts? Given my experiences with their A-frames, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they weren't high-tensile.

Not had one shear off but certainly had the front bolt on the rear nearside shocker drop out from time to time on a 2CVCity Chassis, maybe we should have got a BMW hehe

Just out of curiosity, have any of those folks that have had such mishaps with 2cvCity kit made them aware of the problem so that it could perhaps be rectified on future products?
