 123 ignition + coil

Post 123 ignition + coil
tecnical question

is it worth getting a 123 ignition, if so what are the benefits, just reading on ecas about better efficiancy etc, is this true and how different is it,

also how easy is it to fit (possible for a muppet like me?!)

and also looking at the ecas ignition coil they sell, is that worth it also and what are peoples views on that? it has good reviews, and says it solves hot starting problems (which i encounter at train gates so now dont stop the engine just incase it doesnt start!)

my car came with 123 so i dont know anything about fitting. but in 3 years of ownership ive never had to do the timing. as regards to the coil. i am using a harley one (yellow) and i have never had hot starting problems. i used a normal coil for a while before i bought a newer harley one and it didnt seem to start as well.

My opinion:

points and condenser are cheaper and easier to fix at the side of the road, and if you can tell the difference between a car on 123 and a car on points by driving then I'd be amazed. I personally can't justify spending £100+ on something that doesn't make my car discernably better than something that costs a fiver.

Buy a Harley coil from ecas, they are worth every penny. I've suffered far too many hot traffic jams trying to keep the thing running with a standard coil, that's where I'd spend my money!

Ours has always run on points and condenser, Its only the fitting of it the first time that would be easier imo. After being taught how to set up points and condenser, even I could do it... Citroen built millions of 2cvs that run/ran on points for over 40 years... If it was worth improving I'm sure they would have done something... plus if it gets knackered, its £100 down the drain.. points and condenser = less than a tenner

someone else told me that 123 was a waster but iwanted your opinions as well!

i wont get a 123 then !!

and its this coil im on about

Rust-proofing's over-rated. If it was any good, Citroen would have used it... right?

We've got 123s on all our cars. I wouldn't go back to points.

True, but it wasn't a necessity for one of the cheapest cars around.. Surely a cheap, effective and reliable ignition system was though?

its one less thing to do IMO. i reckon if 123 was available and cheap then citroen would have probably fitted it. yes it is expensive but i think the unit in my car is almost 10 years old, and for me, if it does another 10 and i dont need to change it. then its a worthwhile cost.
