Post How much wheel bearing play is acceptable?
I've just replaced the kingpin on the offside of my Charleston. While the hub was off the car, I noticed that I could move it around on the stub axle because of side to side play in the bearing. It moves maybe two or three mm and the play has disappeared now I've bolted the driveshaft back on. There's no play otherwise and the bearing is not noisy and seems in good nick. Should I be putting a new bearing in or is this normal?

the big nut thats torqued to 35NM preloads the bearing

when its un done the 2 inner races move apart slightly( or fall apart if youve bought the cheapo ones from the cheapo shop)and so this allows the race to flop about

as long as it spins happily isnt gritty or noisy and there is little to no movement at the rim when the hub nut is done up, alls well
