Russell,
for 'short spline' gearboxes, look at the input shaft, just forward of the splines.
If no marking, it's got 2CV ratios.
A single ring, Dyane/Ami ratios.
If two rings, that'll be what you're after...

How can I tell if a gearbox is from a 2cv4? are there any casting marks or numbers on the outside? |
