Post subject:  VW Beetle 1500 pistons
I'm toying with the idea of trying to mate a pair of VW 1500 pistons and barrels with a 2CV engine. Does anyone know if this will work, or is it up to me to pioneer this (and no doubt fail expensively :) )? The 1500 engine has a stroke of 69mm, as against the 2CV's 70mm, but I'm not sure about the diameters of the barrels. Can't find much on Google either. Any thoughts?
Incidentally, I don't feel the need for more power particularly, but since when was a project like this about "need"? :D

EDIT: Hmmmm, maybe I should have put this in "Technical".

Wow. Less than £150 for four barrels and pistons. Cheaper than 2CV stuff ;) .

Because I like maths :shock: I can tell you that a 1500cc 4 cylinder engine with a stroke of 69mm should have a bore of about 83mm.

Compare that to a 602 2 cylinder with a 70mm stoke which should have a 74mm bore, although I haven't double checked that with haynes.

Incidentally, using 83mm pistons with the 2cv's 70mm stroke would give a capacity of 761cc.

You're absolutely right. I wonder how the chap in the link in Neil's post above managed to mate them to the crankcase?

I assume the crankcase is modified? I can't see it being a simple swap but I also wouldn't have though it'd be beyond the capabilities of a good machining firm.

I had a look at this years ago,

there is also the issue of the gudgeon pin and deck height as well as the head head, studs and push rod tubes

none of it impossible if you have a machine shop and too much time on your hands ;)

saw an engine once that used porche pistons think it was based on the visa, more meat on the barrel for increase in bore, but then you have to have the nickasil coating re done or have the barrel sleeved
