I doubt it is this, as it sounds like slightly different symptoms...but..I had a 2cv that had a problem on motorways. It was fine whilst driving with the first choke open, but as soon as I put my foot down and opened the second chock, it coughed and spluttered and I had to pull onto the hard shoulder. As soon as I had eased up on the throttle, the car was fine, until I was back on the main carriageway and put my foot down!!It turned out to be the fuel pump. It works by a little lever that passes though the engine block and engages with the camshaft. The lever had worn and the cam was unable to push it up far enough to provide the pump with enough suction to draw enough petrol through for the carb to work properly with both chokes open.

I thought I'd share my experience, even if it is not the issue with this car.

welcome erikj thanks for post.

Ok, heres what i done tonight. Cleaned out the carb, then cleaned out all jets. A couple were crapped up. The smallest the most. Put everything back on.

Engine didnt fire up. Its blowing fuel into carb etc. carb has fuel.

I can now turn the car over, if i give it revs it will run but wont tick oover. Im having to really rev it to keep it running.

The little pool of fuel is normally there. But now its dripping out quite alot, and on to the floor.

I seem to have gone back a step.

it took 3 rebuilds and 3 heads to get my 2wds engine working

Crapped up jets can give a lean mixture, that can give burned valves.
Valves out of adjustment can burn.
A burned intake valve may cause tha carb overflow and you get the petrol-spill under the overflow-hole in the intakemanifold.

If you can fit a aircoupling in the sparkplug-hole and apply pressurised air, you can hear if the valves leak when the piston is at t.d.c.
Listen in carb for burnt intakevalve and exhaust for exhaustvalve...

Hmm. Just a thought but start with the basics first, take the plugs out and clean them up. check there's no air leaks and all the nuts are on the carb, and the spacer block isn't cracked.

Had something like this with Ripley once - all the way back from Huppel - must have stopped and reset the points half a dozen times, more as an act of desperation, I must admit. Once back in Blighty, and having joined the RAC the year before (for the benefit of the Panhard!), I thought I'd get me moneysworth by letting them have a go; they couldn't sort it either...

It took weeks to pin down, but it finally turned out to be the contact drum on the ignition switch. So you could try seeing if hot-wiring it makes things any better.

I'd already tried the more obvious one - the coil. Have you made sure it's not overheating?

OK, touch wood it seems to be working, School boy error i didnt place the choke back properly so it had locked on full.

Ill take her for a cain down the dual carridgeway tomo try her hot etc. Might ty the delights of great yarmouth.

I had the exactly same problem!... first did the points and timing, a new fuel pump and sender didn't cure it! then I replaced the oil breather and taddar! no slow downs at sixity :o

No air at all was breathing through it ,,,totaly bunged up! :shock:
