 Ignition switch replacement.

Post Ignition switch replacement.
So there I was, lying on the floor of the car 'upside down' while trying to fit the steering lock collar under the ignition switch. I remembered that the ignition key was in place when I removed it, so reaching up I put the key back in, turned it, and....

Bugger! :(

So today's "WTF do I do now?" question is, what needs replacing to make this right? Do I need to buy a complete new ignition switch, and if so what stops the same thing happening when I'm fitting it?
