My Dyane has a small metal box on the bulkhead, with a bundle of wires leading out of it to a non standard coil in the usual place. There's the most horrendous rats' nest of wiring connecting all this up, all crimp connectors and fraying wires. I'd quite like to get rid of the lot and put a standard coil back on. I know I've provided hardly any details of the system in place at the moment, but is it likely to be just a matter of new points, a standard coil and off we go or will there be more to it than that?

Rats nest, might be lumenition if the metal box is kind of cast and finned send it to me for "environmental disposal"

could be Velleman kit as it sounds distinctly DIY if it is its a rather good thing to have doing away with the increasingly crap condensor

boyer comes in a plastic potting box and has a green and a red led on top

all of them should work fine on a standard coil once the wiring has been tidied up

( +ve wire to coil may have a split i make up piggy back jumper this powers the black box. second wire to coil from the box - that's the switching low tension circuit now replacing the points , then there should be an earth, and finally a trigger wire that goes to the original points wire that dissapears down the cowling)

I'll get some pics. It's not a Lumention unit either, I don't think ... it's just a plain metal box with no fins or LEDs. When I get chance I'll photograph it. The reason I want to replace it is that the car packed up with an ignition fault on the way to work yesterday, and while I can carry a spare standard coil and change it in seconds if I need to, I can't do anything with a closed metal box and a weird non standard coil. And I'm far from convinced about the quality of the installation, too.

If it's any consolation John, that unit has been on there for at least 3 years to my knowledge so, I think it's proven itself pretty convincingly!

Yep, it's a Velleman kit, available from Maplins, and a coil from some old Kawasaki or other, I think. Couldn't really help with troubleshooting from here even if you wanted to keep it but you're right, you're just looking at new points/condensor and another coil to put it back to standard. In fact, I think the condensor is probably still fitted, but not connected, and all the standard wiring is untouched, so a side of the road job shouldn't be too tricky either.

Ok, cool. Thinking about it on my way home from work this morning (on my bicycle!), I think I'm going to keep it but solder and heatshrink the wiring instead of the crimp connectors which are there now. I'll probably put a standard coil back on it too. If it's any consolation Luke, I'm well chuffed with the thing generally, it's a great little car.
