Hi

Last Wednesday i had some new tyres fitted to betty only the front 2 back ones were ok. I haven't had them balanced yet but i dont know if they need to be balanced? (what happens if i dont get them balanced would they be ok?)

Driving home from the fitters there was a knocking noise on the passsenger side so jack tightened the bolts but it still occasionally happens mostly going round corners/roundabouts any ideas??? (then when the ideas come in anyone wanna help me fix it? ;) )

Did you swap the wheels around as well? I was thinking it could be rust inside the rims like what I have

Louise

I've read previous posts about wheel balancing for 2CVs and it seems to be accepted that it isn't necessary for our cars.

The knocking? There are a number of things you could check -

1. Wheel bearings.
2. King pins.
3. Rusty wheels - If the wheel bearings/king pins are worn, then when cornering the blown seams would knock on the uprights.
4. Universal joints in the driveshafts.

I just hope it's not expensive as money will be tight just after Christmas.

sounds like rust expanded wheel rims TBH as Sam has mentioned.

If the fitter gave the wheel rim some grief it might just have been enough to make it contact the kingpin, especially on cornering where you get extra forces on the rims.

Id pull the wheel off and check (or get Jack to anyway:) )

Last thing you want is collapsing wheels.

Aha this could be correct then.. the first tyre went on perfect took 5 mins straight on the 2nd tyre was an absolute bugger took about 40 minutes trying to get the tyre to inflate properly they tried inner tubes hitting it to make the air expand etc so yeh i guess the tyre/wheel went through some grief.

So what am i actually looking for would it be easily explainable on here?

Seems like youve got the same problem as me, for some reason, mine gets even worse in reverse :?

Its frightening just how little clearance there is between the kingpin and the rim esp when cornering.

Hi Lou, hope you had a good Xmas.

Most of the below is correct. Forget about the complicated things mentioned it will be just the welds on the rims clipping the kingpin. Its more alarming than it is dangerous. Just get H to take the wheels off and give the welds a tap. That will sort it. Forget about having them balanced unless you get a wheel wobble. They don't usually need balancing on a 2CV and you will be lucky to find a tyre depot willing to do it. Most balancing machine cant cope easily with 2CV rims.

Thanks guys for all your advice

Paul luckily Jacks best friend works at a garage and the tyre place they use for balancing etc have a 3 pin (or whatever) thing that can actually balance 2CV tyres but i obviously wont bother if they dont need doing. (Happy New Year hope you all had fun sounds like you did!)

I will give harry a call and see when he can help me
