Post Alternator bearings
I've got an old alternator that charges fine, but doesn't spin smoothly. Is it possible to replace the bearings at home with basic tools?

If so - does anyone know what bearings are needed, and where I might get some from? Funds are dangerously low to complete my drummer, but I need a working alternator to get to the MOT station and back.

Ben,

yes, easy enough mate if you have a small puller and basic tools. Ive done a couple before. In fact ive got one spare ive done here, Bearings, dunno, i tend to just look at the numbers on the ones that came out then find some to match. If you get stuck i'll swap you yours for one ive got thats done if you like, your only in northampton right?

Usually just the nose bearing that goes due to it being the one that catches the crap.

dificult bit is getting the pulley off the end, then remembering how it all goes back together.

Ducellier ones held in to the housing by a rivited plate so the rivets need to be changed to screws cant remember Iskra, bolted comes to mind

the bearing will have a serese of numbers on it(either a manufacturers cose or bore then outer diameter then depth in mm) or just take it to the "bearing stockist" in your area should be couple of ££

Matt - no, I'm in Surrey. Rob's in Northants, probably confusing the two of us :D

What size puller do I need? I fancy giving this a go - some proper old school spanner twirling!

the nose bearing is located in the housing,no puller nessesary as you drive the rotor out the bearing stays put. the rear may need a puller, a small one but ive done it all without there are 3 main alternators and i cant remember which is which. I just go at them and solve the problems as they arise

put the pulley in a vice with something to protect it as its soft and undo the 24mm nut which is on ridiculously tight and has rusted on over the last 25yrs, and chews up cause its shallow ;)

Ive re-rivveted those ducillier ones Sean, still working so far :)
