Russell,
a 'bounce the corner' test is appropriate for checking the function of friction or hydraulic dampers, but irrelevant for batteurs.
For those, a vibrating plate test is needed, as this can check the behaviour of the batteurs (which are designed to damp movement at the higher end of the suspension frequency range).

I think I recall reading that these vibrating plates may already be in use in Holland, for their equivalent of our MOT test.

Look out for fun and games if they're ever introduced in the UK MOT test...

or on the other hand - the question you ask and more importantly, the answer you get is of more use to a wider audience than a PM would get, therefore sharing the knowledge?

Not quite.

You suggested there may be lots of different answers of varying correctness and usefulness to the original poster.
Bertie suggested that the answers could be useful and applicable to far more than just the original poster.

I've just noticed this thread's title tis "my shock absorber just fell of..."

Just to make it clear... my shock absorber fell OFF.... I think everyone got that.

And I quite agree, I hope this thread will be useful to other people who find themselves in the same situation.

Correctamundo Adrian ;)

It's also one of the reasons I admit my mistakes (notably the fuel pump rod saga  ) so that others may learn from them

Very laudable, Bertie.

And - in that spirit - I might as well mention changing the Saab's oil & filter yesterday evening. I live on a hill. Not a VERY steep hill, steep enough that - pointing downhill - the front of the car is nicely levelled off when on axle stands. Very handy. So - 'nuff space to dive under with the drain tray and pull the plug out.

Warm oil does come out quickly, doesn't it?

So much so that the slope of the hill means that the drain tray gets a bit overwhelmed, with oil going in faster than it went down the hole into the actual container part...

I now appear to live just off the shore of the Gulf of Mexico.

I'd have got away with it, possibly, if it wasn't for my (downhill...) neighbour standing there talking to me whilst I was doing it.

That's ok - it must have found a drain at some point!! It's only going back into the ground where it came from in the first place anyway

How will you know who the technical gurus are, if they only share their knowledge by p.m.?
By searching through replies to other questions on the forum, you can decide who you think knows what they are talking about.

You could look for nice big full-colour adverts proclaiming how great they are.
