Try fitting the outer race, also known as the input shaft... ;)
( Edited to correct brain fade.)

I've started doing a dry-run of reassembling the workings so that i can get my head around how all of it works and i noticed that the needle cage bearing that sits between the input and mainshaft is quite a loose fit on the mainshaft. i'm not sure if it is worn or just a slack fit normally... any opinions?

You have me a bit confused there, ken. I would have thought that the inner race was the mainshaft and the outer was the input shaft?

it was when they were together that i noticed the wobble, i only separated them to illustrate it. I'm uploading a second video showing them together.

2nd video:

I know that both shafts are supported by bearings already but i wouldn't have expected this much play to be normal.

Indeed it is, short term memory must be getting worse.
That'll teach me not to have my tea in between looking at a video and replying to a post...

There's usually some movement, even with a new bearing, but I've never bothered to check it at the far end of the input shaft as you've done.

Ach, i'm probably over thinking it. I'll start putting things back together tomorrow and hope for the best. It can't be any worse than when i took it apart!

that bearing looks serviceable, any way what can you do? you can re fit the needles but if the shaft on pinion are worn ....

stick it all back together and save the brain cells for the crownwheel set up

After 6 years at this forum I can still smile about the Britisch humor.

On the other hand, shouldn't use up too many brain cells popping some of these into the cage... ;)

Ken, you are a neverending font of knowledge! I guess i should do a proper job and replace the rollers as you suggest, but at the same time I'm wondering how much difference it will actually make relative to the life left in it. Surely the end of the box is dictated by when the synchro cones are worn out, which mine seem well on the way to being...
