I've got a 123 that's been fitted to a shelf in the hallway of the house for the thick end of a decade now. It's never given me a moment's problem in all that time, either. 'course, the most effective positioning of it depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to use it to keep part of a shelf free of dust, then the hall is ideal. If you want it to control the sparks on a 2cv engine, then you might prefer to put it somewhere it can "see" the rotation of the engine and the timing of the required sparks. Fortunately, Citroen provided a handy mounting position for that purpose on the lower front of the engine. Even better, the 123's fixing holes mate up perfectly with two threaded holes there! It's just too good to be true.

haha lovely adrian... well mine will be fitted in the latter place, on that nice space on the lower front of my engine where a points box currently is!

James (I'm trying really hard not to say "read this thread" ) but I think somewhere somebody describes how the 123 unit utilises the points cam with magnets whose rotation the unit picks up, so thats why you can't put it elsewhere.
