The wheel bearing has a two-part inner race, which needs to be clamped tightly together by the driveshaft nut.
An average person standing on a 3/4" drive breaker bar at 450mm to 500mm radius should do the job...

Post Re: Front Wheel Bearing
I was in the process of replacing a front bearing until reading this account of James. I'm re-building my 2cv and I'm cleaning/overhauling/re-newing parts as I go.
I soaked one of the front hubs in parafin to clean it of all the accumulated, encrusted grease. I have a new bearing and seals so I thought I'd replace the old one as the parafin would have degraded the bearing's grease.
I wish I had read this first as I would have taken more care on cleaning without soaking :(

However, having removed the wheel flange and the seals (ring nut not touched) the bearing inside is in two halves, unlike the replacement one, and is able to move back and forth (incidentally leaving room between the two halves to re-pack with grease) What is confusing though, because of this ability to move, the ring nut is not acting on it at all.
So, does the ring nut only come into play when the wheel flange is re-installed?
On inspection of the other hub (fortunately not soaked in parafin) it's bearing is also in two halves. I was under the impression that front and rear wheel bearings were interchangeable. The bearing I have was originally acquired for the rear. (But is one piece)

Any comments gratefully received. Thanks
Steve

Front and rear bearings are interchangeable, but construction differs depending on the make.

The ring nut bears on the outer race of the bearing and this should not be able to move. The two half's of the inner race are loose until the wheel flange(usually called the hub) and the driveshaft are assembled, these then clamp them together.

Thanks Joolz. I know it's not rocket science but when the bits/procedures you have/carry out, don't fall into the descriptions of other people (or the Haynes manual) you start to doubt yourself!
This is where this forum is great.
Thanks again.
