It is definitely the leading edge which is grinding, you can see in my pic at the far side of the flywheel the teeth are shiny on the edge.
What is the distance on a 2cv from the starter position to the ring gear? I haven't got a 2cv bell housing here.
I will finish off the wiring today and have another look as I have a feeling it may be shorting out somewhere...

Cheers

well I can start the car, but it will only crank a couple of rotations before the grinding begins and sometimes it takes a few goes so it doesn't grind immediately...
Shall I drive 5000k's across the outback like this!?

Pic shows 2CV set up,
My starter nose cone has a parrallel + tapered section
Where they meet (arrow in pic) aligns with the back of teeth (nearest the starter)

With LNA bell housing aligns with back of flywheel ie 5mm further back

The mountings on the LNA bell housing for the 4 engine studs are 5mm longer.
This will also affect the input shaft alignment?

So one needs to machine 5mm off the mount for the starter motor on an Visa/lna bellhousing . Bugger .
In the years I have researched this it is the first I have heard about it. :(

Thanks for the info Pete.

Some ideas?

Are a 2cv starter and an LNA starter are the same? If so, may be remove from the mounting lugs of the bell housing?

The starter flanges aren't very thick to start with

Yes that's what I meant, machine 5mm of the bellhousing starter mount.
I have no idea an Lna starter is the same as a 2cv.

I will have to test how true my grinding hand is...

From here on the bell housing (x4), then its a standard fitting for starter.

Great info, thx Pete.
Looks like that will gain me 3mm. Do I take any off the engine side?
I will check the throw on both my starters and see, as this engine will probably end up with a standard box I best not...

I plan to take it off the bell housing.
Mark the bell housing has been modded.
That way any engine will fit.
Seems mine are also 3mm
Hope that puts the pinion in the correct place, the teeth on the flywheel will show the engagement.
Perhaps the throw of the starter can be modified, but then its non standard
