Post Re: Sticking Gearbox
one thing I noticed which I read in the restoration manual. I did not have any locking spring jump out at me when I removed the lid of the box. Is there supposed to be one there and if so it is a major part of the mechanism.

Clutching at straws as to why mine is not working :? :?

I think La Poste allows max 30 kg to be shipped. Maybe divide the box in 2 boxes. One with clutch housing, crown wheel and output hubs, the other the rest except gear lever and the lid.
The price you mention, we have heard before. Sorry the only help we can offer is the above.
We are only using La Poste for our deliveries. Maybe give UPS or DHL a call?

Cheers

Right - checked with La Post and for 30Kg it is about €34.

So what is needed.

Take out engine - strip clutch mechanism - take off drum brakes - take off starter motor - disconnect gear lever

Is that about it :?:

Wrap it in bubble wrap and some brown cardboard box and take it to the post office.

That's about it.
Make sure that all oil is out and that the box is clean ( it takes a bloody long time). Use plenty of protective wrap and plenty of thick cardboard to prevent box drop out at the bottom.

It is all out of the car - hardest part was the bloody brakes.

Anyway, when I pulled the box out I could hear a little rattling :? . Stuck a torch in there and can now see the obvious damage. I think the speed I was towing (100 kph) and the fact it didn't have much oil (crap at that) probably wrecked this locking ring and allowing the other dubry to drop down (blocking 3rd and struggling with 1st).

At least it is a proper fault

Just draining the oil out and I will get it packed up and shipped.

Yes the synchromesh holding ring is buggered and the 1st/reverse hub has separated. Hopefully the missing piece has not done other damage.

Hard to believe there's so much gubbins in such a small 'box.
