Hi all,

The engine is back together and running!! No more smoke no more burning oil. I is a happy man. I did notice the air filter casing had oil in tho... Breather prob I think?? And my Autonator is groaning a bit.

Does anyone find if you feather the throttle there car picks up quicker than if you simply floor it? Almost like fuel starvation in my case, any ideas how to cure it?

Or is it a "yes they all do that sir" she does seem more lively tho :D

DC,
too much oil in breather = jiggered rings and/or pistons.
The only difference the breather will make is that if it's functioning correctly, it will expel oil into the air filter box faster than one that's worn out.

If you're having to feather the throttle, it means that the mixture is too lean.
Re-jet to compensate for the 'leaning' effect of the oxygenates and other additives in unleaded fuel, changing the primary petrol jet in the last version of the Solex 26/35 carb from a 102.5 to 107 should cure it.

Manifold not quite seated right?
carb settings needing set properly after some fiddling?

Oil is possibly still in the system from the previous rings - rings need a bit of time to bed in the engine will be a bit sluggish at first but following the advice for running in the new rings usually has the oil consumption down to negligible from the start.

The" break in..." is copied from STP tuning in Germany and is pretty standard in most performance engine building circles- you dont have to break in the camshaft so skip the 3.5Krpm for 15min bit.

Break in oil is usually high zinc content ....such as "diesel" or "older engine" ( as the zinc is normally reduced as it messes the cats in moderns). Cheap oil is recommended as your going to bin it in 50miles. Basically don't pussyfoot around give the new rings some beans from the start we never give it a second thought to put new rings in a race engine and send it out with no special treatment.

Alternator is groaning at getting its name misspelt again

Sorry for the delay in replying! And the spelling mistake.. Very well put Sean lol, I will be changing the oil and filter today, I have ordered a 107 jet, I also have been running with the winter muff on her. Took her for a longish run yesterday, and strangely enough the flat spot seems to have somewhat become not so if at all noticeable, I will check the colour of the plugs today, I saw a carb tuning "guide to" some years ago on the gb site. It was something like winding in the mixture to seat then out about 2 x turns, then set fast idle and slowly wind screw in or out until revs drop and at that point the mixture is correct?? Has a one heard of this procedure at all??

Thanks or all your invaluable help
