This was the view into the air filter body. I wouldn't know if this is too much oil or not...

I feel I may be taking you up on your offer, Sean!

do you have access to a compression gauge? test the compression that'll show the general state of the bores then make a manometer and that'll show you what the breather is doing , BUT if the bores are worn then it may be overwhelming a servicable breather.

turning the engine over using the starting handle you should feel resistance on the compression stroke and an audible gulp or hissing as it goes over the top

'Quick and dirty' compression check method, adapted from a Briggs & Stratton site.
Spin the engine towards TDC and let go of the handle once compression is felt, whereupon the crankshaft should 'bounce back'...

Mind you, that really only checks if there's enough compression for it to start, a proper test is needed to get a clear idea of an engine's mechanical condition.

Don't have a compression gauge, but i know that it does the resist/hiss as i tried handle-starting it not too long ago for a laugh.

Not sure if i need to try this one, as I know that the car starts.

That's true,
but it can be useful if you suspect neglected valve clearance adjustment, especially if it's to the extent that the exhaust valves no longer seal when the engine is at operating temperature.
You might think that's rare, but I had it on a freshly 'restaured' car earlier this year and was able to demonstrate it to the (dismayed) new owner.
Just one of the things which had been 'overlooked' in the rush to get a nice shiny coat of 2 pack paint on and get to market...

Hmm... I think this discussion is starting to get outwith the realms of my technical knowledge. I sorta know about these things in theory, but practice is very different... :(

Setting valve clearances is dead easy. There's a thread in the tech section about it.

Its more just everything together: setting the valves; testing the compression; cleaning the carb; talk of worn bits and bobs etc...

Definitely starting to feel a bit out of my depth
