Where have my balls come from!?

I separated the LNA box to tap some threads out to m10, when I did so a ball bearing dropped out and I am not sure where it is from...
I know it must be from the selector fork but not sure where.
One goes in the channel on the top left of this pic with a spring and pin.

But I found another Ball on the Magnet amongst the oil sludge, not sure if it was already there as this box as definitely been reassembled in the past...

Here is the only wear I can seen.

Post Re: LNA - GS Gearbox's - Ventilated Discs - Oltcit/Axel
I just tried starting the car, it turned over fine at first but after a couple of goes cranking it now makes a horrible grinding noise, new Valeo starter. I fitted the old starter and the smae thing, first few cranks where fine but now it grinds... Looks like the starter gear is not throwing in deep enough. Any ideas?

Cheers

It is the same flywheel and starter from when it was my daily driver 3yrs ago.
The new and old starter also have the same tooth count.
